Gramma's Soups and Stews
Once again in sifting through the piles of recipes every so often I come across one for a soup or stew.
Those recipes as I come across them again will go here:
If found this recipe amusing because it calls for celery and granpa did not like celery...it was a well known fact there were even spoofy songs written about his dislike of it. I'm guessing she either left it out or cut it so small he couldn't see it or taste it!
Pepper soup
(I think it is supposed to resemble the stuffed peppers she used to make)
1 # ground meat
3 medium peppers diced
1 1/2 c chili sauce
1 c uncooked rice
celery
1 lg onion diced
2 qt water
1 qt tomato juice
2 tsp browning sauce(not sure what this is?)
2 garlic cloves minced
1/2 tsp salt
Cook meat , add rest of ingredients, bring to boil. Simmer 1 hour til rice is tender.

Unstuffed pepper soup
(this came from a photocopy) looks like from a book but not sure from where.

1 can crushed tomatoes undrained
1 - 4 oz can of mushroom stems and pieces drained
1 1/2 cups cooked rice
IN a dutch oven or large saucepan , cook the beef, green peppers and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.
Stir in the broth, soup, tomatoes and mushrooms. Bring to a boil. reduce heat; cover and simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add rice and heat through. Yield 10 servings
