More Nourishing...

More Nourishing

Gramma looked after all of us.
With the garden, and with the recipes she made.
Lunch at Gramma's always came with a fresh picked salad and a simple vinegar dressing.  Often times made with endive:

Most of my first two years of college were spent having lunch at Gramma's.  When the weather got cold or roads were bad I would stay over night.

More and more as they got older the recipes became lower in fat and higher in fiber.  Meals always offered veggies.  Quite often soup was the supper of choice.

And yet come holidays we splurged with cookies, cakes, pies and.... Poppy-seed Torte

Poppy-Seed Torte
(half recipe is enough)

Crust:

2 cups graham cracker crumbs(this had 1 cup also listed I couldn't tell for sure what was written on top of what)
1/2 cup butter(this also had 1/4 cup written I couldn't tell for sure what was written on top of what)
2 tsp sugar
combine and line a 9 x 13 pan(smaller for this amount  I'm guessing this refers to the  1 cup and 1/4 cup measures...maybe she made a half pan for her and grandpa sometimes??)

Filling:

Mix 1/3 cup sugar with 3 Tbsp cornstarch, add gradually 2 c milk in double boiler.
Add 8 egg yolks, cook till it coats a spoon.  Remove from heat.
Add 1/2 cup poppy seed.
Dissolve 2 envelopes knox gelatin in 1/2 cup cold water.  Add to custard cool till it thickens around edges.
Beat egg whites with 1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar.  fold gradually 1/2 c sugar  Beat till stiff.  add 1 tsp vanilla, ***** refrigerate 4 hours or more

****I feel like there is a second card that is missing.  Or she just didn't write down all the instructions
but at some point you have to fold the egg white mixture into the custard mixture then
refrigerate*****
